Indulgences
04:22
|
|||
Let me run to the starting line
Let me far above you
Let me past the limits of
Our lives and other rules
Let me shake this level place
Let me search beyond it
Let me break it up
To find the secrets
I won’t pay
For what we deserve
The gates will be open
When we return
Send me closer to the outer lands
Send me high like a comet
Firing in to the realms
Of augury and prophets
Blind my eyes
Let the world repeat
We are only a motion
Tiny waves, nothing more
In the vastness of the ocean
Let me go
Let me realise
Let me ever indulge in
Every single thing
Let me begin
I won’t pay
For what we deserve
The gates will be open
When we return

Near Miss
03:59
|
|||
You thought of many things to talk about
All of those offbeat observations you coined
Nothing so dull as weather and work
And you thought of foreign films and documentaries
And the terrible truth about gm foods and
Why did you get
So near
Just to miss her?
How did you get
So near
To miss?
You thought of all the places
You could take her and stroll around
Names of secondhand markets and vintage shops
And that coffee place where they serve organic chai
And your friends you say, they’re good people
One can paint and another can sing
You should meet them cos they’d love to meet you
It’ll be perfect, you know it will
Why did you get
So near
Just to miss her?
How did you get
So near
To miss?
And you start to think of all the life
That you have together in the future tense
All the holidays and nights away
In exotic places where everyone else goes
You can’t help it, but you think of a family
And townhouse near a good school you’ll never afford
Like everyone else can’t
So you’d better pray that tomorrow goes well
Not like the others
Maybe this time
Maybe this time...
Why did you get
So near
Just to miss her?
How did you get
So near
To miss?

Oh set a course
For the other side of the sea
By the sheer force
Of your countenance, of your belief
Let it hurry you
Way beyond your view
Of tired streets
And repeating day and night
Same old places meet
Together in cold grey light
Let it carry you
Far above that ruined life
And I’ll try
To see both sides
Of the situation
But don’t ask
And you’ll see why
I’m leaving on my time
Oh when the bridge has turned
And the water’s open
I can’t renege on my words
Nothing broken, no one blamed
Don’t worry now
I won’t be far to find
And I’ll try
To see both sides
Of the situation
But don’t ask
And you’ll see why
I’m leaving on my time

Providence
04:50
|
|||
I looked back
To see the empty road behind us
So many miles to go
And through the cloudy glass
Are the shadows of churches and cheap motels
Woven into the mist
Not a soul to be seen
I looked back at the leaves beginning to turn
Blankets of amber, daubs of gold
And the lakes
Glowing mercury
Bestride us as we ride
But you and I are held together in time
By the long radii that we choose
Where we drive, forever to find
What shimmers beyond
I looked back
To see the colony towns in our wake
Dusted with silence and snow
And we listen
To the voice of the ice under our wheels
As old as the world we know
Let providence watch over our path
Indescribable force
So many miles to go
And the lights on the motorway
Beside us flickering on
But you and I are held together in time
By the long radii that we choose
Where we drive, forever to find
What shimmers beyond
But you and I are held together in time
By the long radii that we choose
Where we drive, forever to find
What shimmers beyond

Who cuts the world to size
Who cuts the world to size
Who brings the storms down, corridors of rain
Who cuts the world to size
Who sets the sea to rise
Who sets the sea to rise
The land is sinking, calling out your name
Who sets the sea to rise
My time is swept away
Brick by brick and wave by wave
What have I done to bring this plague
Who summons flames and fire
Who summons flames and fire
The village tumbled and burns out in the water
Who summons flames and fire
And when the dark subsides
And nature once again complies
We cannot count the loss, the shapes out on the shore
But when I cry out, no one replies
My time is swept away
Brick by brick and wave by wave
What have I done to bring this plague
Who cuts the world to size
Who cuts the world to size
Who bleeds the ocean and tears apart the sky
Who cuts the world to size
Who cuts the world to size

Stumble, Trip & Fall
04:20
|
|||
I’ve been here before
These empty rooms, stairs and halls
Are always waiting for your touch
And your presence always enough
I’ve been careful to stay within
But these walls are too thin
I’m hugged by a silence too dangerous
And I never wanted this
But I can’t run after you
Or I’ll stumble, trip and fall
But it’s your way of knowing
What to say that keeps me going
I’ve been trying to stop but it’s not going to stop
I’m guilty of losing control
And it shakes me awake
And it pains me to think
Of the moments ahead or the ones that have passed
Are lost to me, moving too fast
But I can’t run after you
Or I’ll stumble, trip and fall

Carbon
05:12
|
|||
Turn it off, turn it down
Turn away and twist it around
Keep it dark, keep it silent
Keep moving for hundreds of miles and
Take shelter, take cover,
Hold it close, hold each other
Shut the door, shut it out, shut it all away
Just lay down and pray
I’ll show you a different view
The bigger picture
You need to see what happens to
Us, this ship of fools
Don’t crack the shell
Don’t shatter the only hope we’ve got
Don’t let it burn and bleed and over-exceed
The limits of our lot
Try to run from the surface
There’s no time to watch it fade
Let it melt and drown and tumble
How much longer can we stay
Under my carbon sky
Can you start, start again
Can you close your eyes and pretend
Can you rise, can you suffer
Will you care and will you toughen
Will you carve out a new life
From the husk, from the rind
Will you strive, will you live, will you fail in turn
Will you ever learn
I’ll show you a further place
The empty space
You need to see what finally breaks
Us, this total waste
Don’t crack the shell
Don’t shatter the only hope we’ve got
Don’t let it burn and bleed and over-exceed
The limits of our lot
Try to run from the surface
There’s no time to watch it fade
Let it melt and drown and tumble
How much longer can we stay
Under my carbon sky
Don’t crack the shell
Don’t shatter the only hope we’ve got
Don’t let it burn and bleed and over-exceed
The limits of our lot
Try to run from the surface
There’s no time to watch it fade
Let it melt and drown and tumble
How much longer can we stay

Suntrap

A heart this size would keep a thousand rivers flowing
And colours spring and fall away, the signs to show me
The ways of time and all her harsh years remaining
As seasons fade and we forget how our lives are waning
Caught in the orbit of the fire
Concentric paths we follow
I abhor the methodology
Behind the maps of astrology
No florid words can keep the warm days from passing
The tales we learn and books we read are, unlike us, everlasting
We have offered gifts and bodies to the sky
But she beats and she breaks us, an ungracious reply
It is beyond us to imagine
The ceasing of the earth’s engine
Long live our great star
Burning up in the atmosphere
A heart this large needs much to love
Silently raining down blessings from above
But if I stare for too long at the centre
My soul will crack and crumble to ashes fit to scatter

Conquer my voice in your cauldron of noise
The language is lost, the message is gone
Like the builders who raised their tower up to the skies
Whose tongues were confused by the workings of God
They all leave
They all leave me here
In the scenery
Fading out
They don’t see
They don’t see me here
In the scenery
Calling out
Paint over my shape with chameleon colours
Silence my step and muzzle my breath
And I’ll be invisible to all of the other
Cherished and blessed, always moving ahead
They all leave
They all leave me here
In the scenery
Fading out
They don’t see
They don’t see me here
In the scenery
Calling out
I can admit to having made mistakes
We’re only comprised of the fragments we know
And I let the light wash over all of the fakes
And all of the frauds, oh the places I’ll go
The places I’ll go
They all leave
They all leave me here
In the scenery
Fading out
They don’t see
They don’t see me here
In the scenery
Calling out

Cold clear light cast over the blankets
Lesser dark frozen onto the walls
Ghosts in the trees, tides of white voices
Incessant talk, rising only to fall
The tick tick of the rain, dripping in time
With the hum and the glow of the soft green hour
As the house clicks and retracts in its new shell
There is more than you’ll ever know outside this door
Fixed in my warm strata of silence
Caught in the cogs and gears of my craft
We are left abandoned to the strangers
Who are quiet and stay clear of my path
And my day is bound by the sun
In my sleep I wandered the stairs and halls of a structure
And the rooms were untended and old
In each one was an empty bed but the sheets were still warm
I’ll miss you more than you’ll ever know
