Push the planet away from me
A pointillist drop in the raven sea
She blinks a sorry reprieve
Before dispersing piece by piece
We plotted the solar winds
And charted the path of cosmic strings
The spheres will gather to sing
Of the storms and solace our voyage will bring
Burn all the colours and memories you know
We live by the light of a distant glow
So call this stillness your home
For there is nowhere to bury your bones
Refute the essence of time
All knowledge will bend and warp the mind
And deep in the system we’ll find
Our solitary satellite, the first of its kind.
I am traveled too far beyond the mortal eye
And know only the stars and moons in foreign skies
I owe nothing to man or God to reach this high above
It was always my own desire
Oh how they holler and howl at the door
The stowaway phantoms that call out for more
We must brace each other before
They seep through the fissures and cracks and floors
If I should tumble into the void
From off the edge of the threshold
Let me be swallowed by galactic noise
Spirit and soul, renewed, destroyed
I am traveled too far beyond the mortal eye
And know only the stars and moons in foreign skies
I owe nothing to man or God to reach this high above
It was always my own desire

Sirens

What slows me down
Will never hold me back
From every fool that I've found
And the ships that I've sank below
What draws the sound
Through dark and crowded streets
To echo and fall to ground
Where it beats like a new soul
And I will call you home
As the river flows
I will call you home
These songs I know will bring you nearer to me
These words I sing will carry you closer to me
Closer to me
And I will call you home
As the river flows
I will call you home

Reckon I dropped a day or two
Couple of weeks, maybe a month
Since I wrote up a list, things to do
Stuck it beside all the earlier ones
Staring at me through all the times
I sat there doing anything other
Than cross off my list, a couple of lines
No much to do, not much to cover
Maybe I got bit by the bug
Makes me idle, makes me afraid
Of the hole I’m in, how deep I’ve dug
Too far down to ever be saved
It’s a hard sell, this heavy life
Don’t think I’m built for an easy ride
And the closer it gets, the closer it gets and I
I’ll let go, but I can’t let go
I’ll let it slip from my hands
It’ll kick off when I run out of rope
Gotta stop me now if I don’t understand but
I’ll let go but I can’t let go
I’ll let it slip from my hands
It’ll kick off when I run out of rope
You gotta stop me now
And I’m looking back
Same time each morning, back at myself
Hollow-eyed, hangdog, spirit gone slack
Ready to crawl again into my shell
Certain I can rally for change
Drag out the body and dust off the mind
Ready to flex those indolent brains
Whipped into shape, into their prime
But I know myself and I know what I’ll do
Stick another list with the rest of the group
And another one up, and another one up and I
I’ll let go, but I can’t let go
I’ll let it slip from my hands
It’ll kick off when I run out of rope
Gotta stop me now if I don’t understand but
I’ll let go but I can’t let go
I’ll let it slip from my hands
It’ll kick off when I run out of rope
You gotta stop me now

Wayfarer

I have long been a lone figure traveling
Dwarfed by the hollow of the sky
(Who will think of me when I am gone
Who will sing my hosanna)
And so as the stars are unraveling
As owls slit the night with their cry
I will pick my path through peripheral
Fields out of sight out of view
And the trails though fanged and feral
Are the only passageway through
There’s a catch and a trick around every
Turn and twist as the track unwinds
Down the narrows and the rifts
That sunder the north divide
And south lie the cold grey deserts
With their dark breath shipped on the breeze
And beyond I will welcome without pleasure
The glowing green clutch of the sea
I must walk the world and her many ways
Navigate the maze that encircles her
But who am I speaking to
When I call your name out loud to the open air
[x2]
So the axis
Sputters till the day it is done
It is blind to those who inhabit it
Sure in its mission to the sun
And I will always presume you are safe
In the arms of another
But my calling pulls me away
From the life of a lover
I must walk the world and her many ways
Navigate the maze that encircles her
But who am I speaking to
When I call your name out loud to the open air
[x2]

St John's

With my hand on the gate at St. John’s
I look upon the tower to where it meets the moon
And the wind speaks the same words as it did when I was young
And they float down and settle midst the gloom
I breathe in the earth and old mossy stone
And scuff the damp grass where many times I have trod
These thoughts are the same thoughts where’s untold others have gone
Long buried below my own skin and blood
Oh how my prayers lie stacked by the gate
Shut tight against the dark with a cold rusty chain
No key I ever have found will unlatch my fate
No questions are answered, and nothing is gained
And the evening is quiet, the crossroads lie still
Nobody to guide me back to my empty home
So I will keep waiting, as the night brings her chill
With neither rhyme nor reason for the end of my poem
With my hand on the gate at St. John’s
I look upon the heavens, far flung from the stars
But the tower is in ruins, and the people are gone
And there is no solace in this short life of ours
